How To Clean A Sink with Wet and Forget Indoor

Find out how to clean a sink without scrubbing!

When you get right down to it, sinks are miracles. From their faucets flows fresh, clean water that quenches our thirst, washes our hands, and helps boil our pasta.

Yet, like a magician offering to pull a rabbit out of their hat after finishing a mud run, the miraculous nature of sinks is easy to dismiss when they’re dirty and smell bad.

Even if you object to the description of your specific sink as odorous, you’re still likely dealing with microscopic germs and bacteria. A recent study found that of a random sampling of 100 kitchens, 15% of sinks contained E. coli, and nearly half of the kitchens contained fecal matter.

So, while the sinks in our kitchens and bathrooms deserve praise, they also deserve deep cleaning to rid them of harmful bacteria and odor-causing agents. With the right tools by your side and our guide on cleaning a sink, you can quickly and efficiently honor your home’s daily miracle workers.

Why Do Sinks Get Dirty?

A lot of gross stuff tends to end up in kitchen sinks:

  • Dirt from washed hands
  • Moldy leftovers
  • Runoff from raw meat
  • Sponges
  • Uneaten bits of food

Our bathroom sinks also have to deal with their share of grossness, too:

  • Bacteria and viruses from washing hands after using the bathroom
  • Bacteria from toilet plumes
  • Hair
  • Spit from brushing our teeth

Sinks tend to be damp and warm, so they are natural breeding grounds for mold, mildew, bacteria, and viruses. When you combine that environment with everything we dump into our sinks, it shouldn’t be a surprise that the basins we often use to clean ourselves are rife with these nasty microscopic organisms.

Of course, there’s also the stuff in your sink that you can see. Things like dirt, grease, and grime accumulate over time, leaving you wondering whether the porcelain was ever as vibrant white as you remember.

What Tools Do You Need to Clean a Sink?

In most situations, you only need a couple of things to clean your sink:

Wet & Forget Indoor is an effective disinfectant that cuts through grime and grease while killing 99.9% of bacteria and viruses on hard, non-porous surfaces.* It’s also safe to use on various indoor surfaces, including fixtures, sinks, and countertops.

Additionally, the formula works to attack mold odors at their source instead of masking them. This leaves your sink actually smelling fresh and not just fresh-ish.

Using Wet & Forget Indoor is easy. There’s no need for scrubbing, breaking into a sweat, or cursing your family for not cleaning up after themselves. Instead, simply spray, wait, and wipe and you’re done.

Finally, because Wet & Forget Indoor cleans, disinfects, and deodorizes, there’s no need to carry a bevy of cleaning sprays in your pantry. The spray will also help inhibit the future growth of mold and mildew.

How to Disinfect and Deodorize a Sink

With your tools at your side, it’s time to clean:

  1. Open the flip cap on your Wet & Forget Indoor bottle
  2. Remove the sprayer from its slot in the handle.
  3. Pull the hose tip from the sprayer and extend it to its full length — about three feet
  4. Press the hose tip into the opened cap until you hear it click into place.
  5. Twist the sprayer’s nozzle for either spray or stream.
  6. Spray the sink and faucet thoroughly.
  7. Let the spray sit for at least 10 minutes. (For the application to be most effective, the sink’s surface should remain visibly wet from the spray during this time.)
  8. Let air dry or wipe clean with a cloth.

The formula dries quickly, too, so it’s not a big deal if you forget to wipe it clean afterward. It won’t leave behind any residue, either.

So, a moment of active work and 10 minutes of waiting is all you need to disinfect, clean, and deodorize.

How to Keep Your Sink Clean

You only need to apply Wet & Forget Indoor once a week to inhibit mold and mildew growth. If you notice any new growths before your next application, it’s okay to spray as needed.

You can also take a few simple steps to keep your sink in a general state of cleanliness. Regularly replacing sponges and changing dish towels can help reduce the spread of bacteria and viruses, for instance.

If you prefer not to throw out your sponge after every use, you can also microwave them or clean them in the dishwasher. However, there are several caveats here, as dry, artificial, or metallic sponges can catch fire when microwaved, and some dishwashers may not reach the necessary temperatures to kill off bacteria.

If you use your sink to defrost meat or pour out raw meat juice, you should immediately clean it to prevent potential bacteria or viruses from spreading.

Should You Use Bleach to Clean Your Sink?

Bleach is a powerful tool in the fight against bacteria and viruses. However, its power can make it an inappropriate tool when cleaning your sink.

Bleach may discolor or damage your sink. It’s known to cause rust when used on stainless steel and leave yellow stains when used on some forms of porcelain, and if you have granite countertops, bleach can damage them, too.

Wet & Forget Indoor, on the other hand, is bleach-free and gives off no irritating fumes. That means it will better protect your sink, faucet, and the surrounding counters.
