How To Clean A Bathroom

By Wet & Forget
Find out how to clean a bathroom without bleach.

We’ve all had that moment when we stepped into a bathroom and immediately realized something wasn’t right. Maybe it’s that musty smell, or perhaps those stains that were mere islands on your bathroom now have grown to be continents.

Even if your goal is merely to prevent above the scenario, you will have to do some cleaning. And, with our guide on how to clean your bathroom, you’ll find that it takes practically no time to clean, deodorize, and disinfect the space.

Why Is Your Bathroom Dirty?

If you were to ask a group of people what part of the bathroom is typically dirtiest, there’d be a universal cry of “Toilet!” before you even finish the question. Yet, despite the wide range of potential toilet-related occurrences, it’s rarely the porcelain throne that’s the germiest thing in the bathroom.

In fact, in most bathrooms, the toothbrush holder may be what’s bringing down the bathroom’s collective cleanliness. Shower curtains and faucet handles also rank high in bacterial concentration.

That’s not to say that toilets are merely innocent bystanders here. On the contrary, toilet plumes can help spread bacteria and viruses throughout the bathroom.

Yet, bacteria isn’t the only way your bathroom’s luster begins to languish. Hard water stains and grime won’t cause adverse health effects but are unsightly nonetheless.

What Do You Need to Clean a Bathroom?

People dread cleaning their bathroom because they begin to picture all the tools they think they’ll need. Mop buckets, cleaners with harsh chemicals, brushes of various sizes, and rubber gloves are believed to be the baseline minimum to eliminate germs, odors, and stains in your bathroom.

In reality, though, all you need are two things:

  • Wet & Forget Indoor kills 99.9% of bacteria and viruses* on hard, nonporous surfaces while also deodorizing.
  • Wet & Forget Shower is a weekly no-scrub shower spray that cleans and prevents soap scum and shower grime and removes surface stains caused by mold and mildew.

That’s all you’ll need to clean your bathroom and leave it smelling fresher. You won’t have to scrub, use bleach, or contort your body into unhuman twists to reach and clean distant surfaces.

How to Set Up the Trigger Sprayer for Wet & Forget Indoor or Shower

Wet & Forget bottles are designed to be easy to use and practical. For most of our products intended for indoor use, that means extension hoses and strong sprayers that let you reach otherwise difficult-to-reach areas.

To get either Wet & Forget Indoor or Shower ready for use, follow these instructions:

  1. Open the flip cap.
  2. Remove the sprayer from its slot in the handle.
  3. Pull the dangling hose tip from the sprayer until it reaches full extension — about three feet.
  4. Press the hose tip into the open cap until you feel it click into place.
  5. Rotate the sprayer’s nozzle to either spray (for quick application) or stream (to reach distances of up to ten feet).
How to Deodorize and Disinfect Your Bathroom

Wet & Forget Indoor cleans, deodorizes, and disinfects bathroom surfaces, and it does so without bleach or irritating fumes. By cleaning gently, the spray is safe to use on almost any bathroom surface you’ll encounter:

  • Bathtubs and showers
  • Cabinets, countertops, doors, handles, and walls
  • Fixtures, faucets, and sinks
  • Fabric, such as shower curtains
  • Garbage cans and hampers

Even though there’s a cleaner specifically designed for showers, Wet & Forget Indoor can help control the growth of mold and mildew in showers.

Once you’ve readied your Wet & Forget Indoor bottle using the directions used in the previous section, the active work is minimal.

Here’s how to disinfect and deodorize hard, nonporous surfaces with Wet & Forget Indoor:

  1. Apply the cleaner to bathroom surfaces until visibly wet.
  2. Let the surface remain visibility wet for 10 minutes.
  3. To clean grease or grime, wipe with a dry cloth.
  4. Otherwise, allow the surface to air-dry.
  5. Repeat the process every seven days to control future mold and mildew growth.

To sanitize soft surfaces with Wet & Forget Indoor, use a similar process:

  1. Hold the bottle six to eight inches from the fabric.
  2. Spray the soft surface thoroughly.
  3. Allow fabric to remain visibly damp for at least five minutes
  4. Let fabric air-dry overnight.

There’s no scrubbing involved, and most bathrooms should only need a few minutes for a deep cleaning.

How to Remove Soap Scum & Surface Mold and Mildew Stains from Your Bathtub, Shower, or Fixtures

Even after vanquishing mold and mildew from your bathroom, you may still be left with soap scum and shower grime.

That’s where Wet & Forget Shower steps in. One spray a week is usually all you need to remove soap scum and surface mold and mildew stains.

Like its indoor-use sibling, Wet & Forget Shower is safe on a variety of common bathroom surfaces and materials:

  • Acrylic
  • Chrome
  • Cultured marble
  • Fiberglass
  • Porcelain
  • Shower tile
  • Stainless steel
  • Stone
  • Vinyl

Generally, the only bathtub, fixture, or shower surface you shouldn’t use it on is natural marble. And while Wet & Forget Shower will remove surface mold and mildew stains from tile, it won’t remove embedded grout stains.

(If you need an effective grout clean, you can make your own from common household ingredients. You can use the grout cleaner a day or two before applying Wet & Forget Shower.)

To remove soap scum surface mold and mildew stains from your bathtub, shower, or fixtures, follow these instructions:

  1. Follow the instructions in the “How to Get Wet & Forget Indoor or Shower Ready for Use” section above.
  2. Spray bathtub, shower, or fixture surfaces after the last shower of the day.
  3. Let the formula work for at least eight to 12 hours but no more than 24.
  4. Rinse surfaces before showering the next day.

If you’re starting from an especially mildewy place, you may need to repeat the above steps daily until your bathtub or shower is in a better place. At that point, you can resume weekly applications.

Wet & Forget bleach-free cleaners make cleaning your bathroom easy.

Should You Use Bleach?

Bleach can be an effective tool in beating back mold and mildew. However, bleach also comes with a variety of downsides:

  • Can damage surfaces.
  • Can deteriorate metal mixtures.
  • Can discolor countertops.
  • Gives off a noxious odor.

In fact, bleach’s effect on mold and mildew may be overstated. It can lighten the color of mold and mildew colonies, making it seem like they’ve disappeared when they’ve turned practically invisible.

When you consider this all, it’s clear that bleach may not be the ultimate bathroom cleaner some make it out to be.
